The Art Of Sleeping
Lately I have not been sleeping well. By that I mean that I wake at 3:00am and
toss and turn for the remainder of the night until I roll out of bed at 6:30am.
I am not a good sleeper.
I am beggining to think that there is an art to having a restful sleep, and that I do not
posess any inherent talents for this art. During one of these episodes of insomnia that I
experience, I thought I would doodle with my new pencil crayons. The lilac coloured rose
below is the product of my early morning doodles yesterday. While it was nice to pass the
time creating art, I am hoping that this phase of nocturnal drawing will pass.

Please scroll down to check out the info
for a great workshop coming up!

Pynelogs 100th Anniversary Celebration
My grandmother and I pose in front of the 12" x 12" painting that I donated for the celebration. The painting depicted my Grandmother, Jean Cartwright (Kennedy) when she was a nurse at the Lady Elizabeth Memorial Hospital ( present day Pynelogs). 100 tickets were sold at $100.00 each and guaranteed that the ticket holder would leave with one of the canvases at the end of the night. My Grandmother was one of those ticket holders.

My father, Colin Cartwright and my Aunt Carol (Berube) were born at the Lady Elizabeth Memorial Hospital.

The tickets were drawn randomly and a good friend of my Grandmothers, Helen Kipp, was drawn first. She was able to choose first from the gallery of 100 pieces of art. Helen rushed over to the painting of my Grandmother and staked her claim. She then turned to us and said that she was giving the painting to my Grandmother. She said that she thought it should stay in the family. What a beautiful and generous thing to do!

A glimpse into the past.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Pynelogs in
Invermere, B.C. It is presently the cultural hub of the
Columbia Valley. In years past it was used as a
hospital and a care home for the mentally disabled and
the elderly. Pictured below is my grandmother,
Jean Cartwright, she was a nurse at the Lady
Elizabeth Memorial Hospital (Pynelogs).
I decided to paint a portion of this photo
as my donation to the 100 years celebration.

This 12" x 12" canvas will be one of a hundred original
pieces of art that will be drawn by ticket holders during
the celebrations at Pynelogs on Saturday, July 19th, 2014.

Hope to see you there for wine, music
and dancing under the stars!
Cheers!

POSTCARDS
My husband made this stand for my post cards out of
old barn board. The post cards I printed are of local
views and wildlife in our valley. They are available at
the Canal Flats Family Pantry for $1.50 each.

P.S. - The Headwaters Art Society is exhibiting at Pynelogs, in Invermere next week. I will have three new pieces for display as well as 5 of my 4" x 4" tiles. Join me on Wednesday evening from 6:00pm to 9:00pm for the opening night.
Cheers!

On Sunday, November 3rd, 2013, the Headwater's Art group hosted a figure drawing session in the new art space at Discovery Center in Canal Flats. We had 9 people attend from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Paula Cravens began the session with some instruction and examples for our group. We did exercises in 1, 2, 5 and 10 minute sketches. Participants used pencil, pen, cante, paint and charcoal. The afternoon sped by and before we knew it, it was time to bid our gracious model goodbye and enjoy a coffee and chat with colleagues. We plan to hold another figure drawing session in the new year and I will post the information here on my blog. Cheers!

This past weekend I decided to set up
my own "Body Art Tattoo Parlor" on
my back deck. I used my airbrush and
my European body art paints to spray
these stencils onto my family and friends.
We had a lot of fun!

Red Tailed Hawk
WOOD BURNING
Years ago my grandmother gave me a wood burning tool
that had belonged to my grandfather. Recently, I created this
8 x 10 panel that shows a red tailed hawk perched on a tree
branch. I plan to frame and display it at Pynelogs during the
Headwaters Art Society's show in May. The exhibit will take
place from May 14th to May 28th, 2013. The reception is being
held on Friday, May 17th, 2013.
Hope to see you there!

Watercolour Fun
On Wednesday, March 6th, the Headwater's Art
Society met for an evening of watercolours led by
Paula Cravens. It has been years since I have played
with watercolours.  It was a nice change to be free
and loose with my brushes. This is one of two paintings
that I created that evening.
